Thy Mother Is Like a Vine in Thy Blood: Viola P. Andrews and the Andrews Family
[Back to City] [Back to County]

  • When: September 28, 2001-January 12, 2002
  • Description: This exhibition celebrates Viola Perryman Andrews and her remarkable family. Mrs. Andrews raised ten children, first as a sharecropper in Morgan County, Georgia, and then as a seamstress in Atlanta. She fought with single-minded determination to educate and inspire her children. Despite the hardships they faced, the family lived in a creative and imaginative environment that shaped the rest of their lives. “I honestly believe that all of the Andrews have ‘art’ also ‘Writing’ talent,” Mrs. Andrews concluded. Drawn from the personal papers of Viola Andrews, of artist Benny Andrews, and of novelist Raymond Andrews, the exhibition tells the family’s story through objects that they created: autobiographies, novels, short stories, correspondence, scrapbooks, paintings, photographs, and drawings. Mrs. Andrews’ story and her writings chronicle, in the words of her son, Benny, “a life and time that has not only passed, but has been inadequately represented.”
