"Athens and Clarke County: Our Community Then and Now"
[Back to City] [Back to County]

  • When: Sunday, September 26 at 3:00 p.m
  • Where: Athens-Clarke County Library in the auditorium
  • Description: Second in the series "Community Dialog About Race," this one features Dr. Douglas Bachtel, Professor of Housing and Consumer Economics. His expertise in statistics and demographics is most widely known through his work as editor of The Georgia County Guide, The Georgia Municipal Guide, and The Georgia Housing Guide.  He will give us an overview of what our community is like today and what we used to be like. From the first discussion that focused on Brown v Board of Education, we learned that people feel that we have lost a sense of community. This began when the schools were changed from neighborhood schools that seemed to provide a focal point for communities. Once Dr. Bachtel helps us understand our community as it is today, since schools as a community focal point are no longer a reality, are there actions we can take to regain some of that sense of community? Facilitator will be Dr. Keith Parker, Associate Provost from the University of Georgia's Office of Institutional Diversity.
