About the Kenan Research Center
The Kenan Research Center is the library and archives division of the Atlanta History Center. Our collecting interests include, but are not limited to: genealogy and family history of the southeastern United States; Southern gardening, horticulture and landscape design; Southern architecture, politics and civic affairs; regional decorative arts and design and its influences; African American history and the civil rights movement; southern cooking, gay and lesbian historical studies; military history (primarily the American Revolution and the Civil War), regional photography, and the history of photography. It is a non-circulating library open to the public and handicapped-accessible. The library holds over 15,000 cubic feet of records, including 33,000 published volumes, more than 2,000 manuscript and photograph collections, and 7,700 rolls of microfilm. The Kenan’s clientele includes academic researchers, students, writers, media representatives, genealogists, artists, property researchers, school teachers, and representatives from organizations whose collections are maintained at the library. The Kenan Research Center is open to the public between the hours of 10:00 am and 5:00 pm, Tuesday-Saturday.
Position Description
The Reference Manager supervises a staff of volunteers and interns in the Goldstein Reading Room to fulfill the research needs of both on-site and off-site patrons. The tasks performed by this staff include the following: demonstrating how to use library catalogues and archival finding aides to on-site visitors and introducing patrons to appropriate sources for their research; handling the retrieval of archival materials from storage; responding to reference requests received via phone, email, fax and postal mail; and coordinating and carrying out paid research projects requested by off-site patrons. In addition, the Reference Manager develops and conducts volunteer training programs, administers the annual budget for the Goldstein Reading Room, gives orientation sessions of the research facility to undergraduate and graduate student groups, and produces and delivers professional workshops related to the holdings of the Kenan Research Center.
Essential Job Function:

Qualifications
The position requires graduate level archival education acquired either through an ALA-accredited M.L.S. degree or through a relevant field such as history, historic preservation, or museum studies. The candidate must have at least one year of experience in an archival repository. The position requires an outgoing and helpful personality who possesses excellent customer service skills. Knowledge of Atlanta history and genealogical research is preferred, as is experience in public speaking. The candidate should be proficient in Microsoft Office programs and have the ability to life to lift up to 40 pounds safely and climb ladders to retrieve records. The candidate must be able to work a Tuesday-Saturday schedule.

Position Description
The Archivist will focus his/her energy on developing an archives program for the company and managing its collections. Position Summary
Working independently and on a self-initiated basis, the Special Collections Reference Librarian is responsible for managing the day-to-day operations of the Library. Responsibilities include: providing first-rate reference and information services; ensuring professional and appropriate patron relations; managing Reading Room resources; and working with others to help meet the organization’s strategic goals and objectives. This position is comprised of 60% reference desk work and 40% management of the library and other duties. This full-time position is a Tuesday–Saturday employee.

Experience/Skills Required:

Familiarity with accepted conservation and preservation methods in rare book and manuscript collections. Knowledge of Georgia history a plus.
